ONLINE | Artz Connect with Artz Philadelphia - April
ARTZ Philadelphia and Main Line Art Center are deeply committed to protecting the health and well-being of our community members, and yet we also recognize the impact of program suspensions and doors shut to visitors. We know, even though necessary, these closures and program cancellations have caused increased isolation and decreased creative and social engagement for people living with dementia and their care partners, who are among those people most vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19.
And so in this time of prescribed physical distancing, we have been experimenting with a complementary but distinctly different Rx – we’re calling it ARTZ-Connect.
ARTZ-Connect @ Main Line Art – like all of ARTZ Philadelphia's programs -- are designed especially for participants living with dementia or memory loss and for their care partners. ARTZ-Connect moves our popular ARTZ @ The Museum programs into a virtual space, still led by a professionally-trained, caring facilitator; still engaging participants in lively conversations about works of art; and still a place where all participants can be themselves. To sign-up please rsvp on the Artz Philadelphia events page.

Ellen Tiberino: Continuing the Tiberino Legacy in Art
Ellen Tiberino is an accomplished artist who comes from the famed Tiberino family of artists and advocates. Sometimes called "the West Philadelphia Wyeths," Ellen's mother, Ellen Powell Tiberino, was an artist who "infused works in the figurative tradition with an African American spirit," and her father, Joseph Tiberino, was a renowned artist. Together with her brothers Raphael and Gabriele, this prolific family carries on a grand tradition of boundary-pushing artistic exploration which foregrounds Black identity and experience. Join us to hear Ellen discuss her work and family's important legacy on our region.
The lecture will be followed by a light reception with the artist and examples of her mosaics in the galleries.

Lecture: Why Compost? with Mother Compost
Join Mother Compost to learn what composting is, why it is important for our environment, and how you can start recycling your organics.
About Mother Compost
Mother Compost is a Main Line based organic materials pick-up service that facilitates a simple solution to turn househould waste into fertilizer. Our mission is to empower families to make sustainable choices without having to commit extra time and energy. Currently, food and green waste thrown into the trash cans is taken to landfills, where it cannot biodegrade normally due to lack of oxygen. These materials end up releasing methane gas instead, which is more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. What's more, landfills are the third largest emitter of methane in the U.S. Here's How Mother Compost helps our customers become part of the solution:
- Provide5-gallon bucket to store food scraps and green waste
- Collect bucket contents every other week from customers' homes
- Send reminders via text & email the day prior to collection
- Clean containers & liners after every pick up
- Return up to 60 pounds of compost to each customer in the spring
- People can test drive if composting works for them during a month-long free trial!

INTRICACY: The 19th Annual Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition Opening Reception & Artist Talks
Main Line Art Center is proud to present INTRICACY: The 19th Annual Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition, juried by Susanna Gold. The exhibition will be on view from November 11 through December 22, 2022. Join us for an evening of artist talks, music, and refreshments on Saturday, November 12, 6-8 PM. Registration is required.
INTRICACY brings together three artists working in different mediums -- sculpture, printmaking, and installation -- for a deep-dive into the labor-intensive processes that yield their delicate yet complex forms. Becca Barolli bends, weaves, braids, and knits wire lengths with repetitive, compulsive movements to shape her work into seemingly soft forms that resemble anything but metal. Agathe Bouton surpasses our expectations of traditional printmaking with her large-scale compositions that are combined and recombined, cut, layered, and stitched into endless variations. Eric Standley builds his series of over 50 elaborate, radiating designs from layer upon layer of vibrant paper that has been cut with exacting precision, each intimately-scaled work demanding to be considered in its own right as well as within the broader installation context. When viewed in juxtaposition, the work of Barolli, Bouton, and Standley encourages the viewer to understand the detailed and complicated methods behind their equally detailed and complicated compositions
The Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art, presented by Main Line Art Center in conjunction with the Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition, honors chosen artists with an exhibition in the Center's gallery and an award of $1,000. This award and associated exhibition program is an effort to support talented contemporary artists, to honor deserving artists in the field, and to encourage excellence and experimentation in artistic practice, presentation, and community involvement.

Lecture: Goya and the Gross Clinic
In this lecture, painter and art instructor Henry Martin shares his original painting series: "Goya and the Gross Clinic." This series foments a new and provocative understanding of Eakin's masterpiece as it refers to Goya and the "The Black Paintings" through the use of the double image. Specific depictions of "A Portrait of Samuel Gross," alongside exact displays of the reference points in Goya's work from which the double images arise, gives Henry's series of sixteen paintings remarkable clarity and allows a thorough and insightful view of Philadelphia's most important painting.
Henry will explore how this view enhances our current understanding of the crown jewel of Philadelphia's art collects and how the reference to Goya and the double image presents a notable, if yet seldom seen, thread in American art.

The physical, cultural, and virtual worlds overlap and sometimes collide in the creation of pieces in this exhibition. Energy and emotion work together to evoke “garments” that incorporate unusual materials. Wearable or static, these artifacts speak to who we are as individuals.
The diverse media these makers utilize and explore brings awareness to the beauty, vision, personal understanding, sensitivity to sustainability, and inclusiveness in the wide realm of fashion. Wearable or static, the works focus on the impact of fashion as art and its relevance to culture and society.

Little Luxuries: Choosing Art For Your Home with Andrea Cummins-Disbro
Join Andrea Cummins-Disbro, Owner & Principal Designer of Lost Orchid Interiors, to learn how to choose art for your home that will create a space that is beautiful and perfectly you! There will be a wine and cheese meet and greet with Andrea following the talk.
"I start every project with one question: Who is your favorite artist or what is a piece of art you've seen that inspires you? Art is so subjective and if I can understand what my clients determine to be beautiful, I can unlock their vision for home. I approach every project like a piece of art. I know it will be organic and evolving and I believe the color story and textures to be key in informing the design. I also believe that art is the soul of a home, color is the spirit. When we invest in art that we truly love, then we are investing in our own well-being. We are also inviting others to understand who we are. It is a subtle vulnerability because we invite others to step into our mindset and look through the lens of what we find striking, thought provoking and worthy of our space."
Lost Orchid Interiors is an award-winning interior design firm located outside of Philadelphia with projects nationwide. Their passion is to design storied spaces. Their designs are curated and fearlessly bold and colorful. They believe in the power of unusual patterns, fresh color palettes and quality craftmanship to create interiors that are unapologetic yet timeless.

Exhibiting Artists
Salvatore Annunziato
Salvatore Annunziato is a ceramic artist based in Central PA. His work in clay has been shown internationally, and his experience building and firing kilns has created unique opportunities to define his craft. As wood kiln director and teacher at the Lancaster Creative Factory, Annunziato invites conversation and creativity to arise through experimental approaches and a fundamental dedication. He holds a BFA in Ceramics from Marlboro College and over a decade of experience working with fire.
Korissa Frooman
Korissa Frooman is a Brooklyn based anti-disciplinary artist whose work oscillates between mediums. In 2022, Frooman graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Fashion Design. Throughout her time there, Frooman focused on conceptual collections merging the body into sculpture and the everyday. Her work today is heavily influenced by her background in fashion design, incorporating textiles and pattern making techniques. Curating objects as an extension of oneself, Frooman introduces the souls of lives adjacent through touch.
Barbara Straussberg
Barbara Straussberg is an abstract painter and paper artist working in Philadelphia. Her process is material based and explores the intersection of ancient paper art with contemporary abstract painting. Her studio practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, paper sculpture and collage.

Accessible Art Artist Reception
We are thrilled to mark the 60th anniversary of our Accessible Art program with this milestone exhibition, featuring the artwork of hundreds of participants from more than 15 partner sites. This artist reception is intended for the artists and their families to join us in commemorating the exhibition and their artistic achievements. Due to the sensory needs of many of our exhibiting artists and this event is not open to the public. We strive to create a low sensory environment that includes a quiet room available during the event, sensory stations in the exhibition, and lower volume attendance. Please register for the event only if you are an exhibiting artist or their family.
Check our website in mid-January for a social story to prepare for your visit. ASL sign language interpretation will be available during the event after checking in at the front desk.

The Pink Palette Project: Art for Those on Their Breast Cancer Journey (JUNE)
The Pink Palette Project at Main Line Art Center is an art group dedicated to raising awareness and spreading hope, where creativity and courage come together to support those at any stage in their breast cancer journey. We meet every second Thursday of the month for a fresh, inspiring art lesson led by one of our talented teaching artists. We believe in the transformative power of art, and each session offers a nurturing environment where you can relax, embrace your creativity, and connect with others who understand your experience.
In June we will be making rings in our jewelry studio. Inspire intentions of positivity with meaningful jewelry in this one-day workshop. Students will learn the basics of working with sterling silver using traditional jewelry tools and techniques to make their stamped ring using various fonts and characters. Come with an intention in mind, or be guided through a short reflection of the past year in order to look forward with mindfulness and new manifestations. Please wear sneakers or boots, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothes in the studio. If you have your own safety glasses and a dust mask, please bring them, otherwise, they will be provided. Your reading glasses may also help to see tiny details.
