Join Transformation artist Matthew Courtney for an intensive journey in ceramics that combines throwing and handbuilding to create larger sculptural work. This one day workshop begins with an artist's talk on recent works and residency with the Duhaung Center for Creativity in Lanzhou China. Then we will focus on using the wheel as a tool to make sculpture. Through demonstration, students will get to experience firsthand the artist's technique for throwing and stacking to create larger works. Then, students work hands-on using techniques learned in the demonstration to create their own piece, and with assistance of instructor, learn how to assemble their thrown pieces in larger sculpture. Bring a bagged lunch and drink for lunchtime slideshow lecture. Please also bring throwing tools and $30 to purchase clay (25 lbs.) from Art Center (students may choose to share the 25 lb bag of clay).
